Information Consumption Patterns in the USA

Highlights from a report on American consumers indicate that in USA, bytes of information consumed by individuals have grown at 5.4 percent annually since 1980. They spend nearly three hours per day on the computer, not including time at work and spend a huge amount of time at home receiving information, an average of 11.8 hours per day. Roughly 3.6 zettabytes (or 3,600 exabytes) of information were consumed in American homes in 2008.
Computer and video games account for 55 percent of all information bytes consumed in the home, because modern game consoles and PCs create huge streams of graphics.

Following table indicates the television and radio consumption in US.

According to the above table the estimated 292 million U.S. viewers average nearly five hours of TV viewing per day. Total TV viewing accounts for 41 percent of total hours of information consumption, and nearly 35 percent of total bytes.
The problem with being online most of the time is that we fail to prioritize and separate what's necessary from what's a burden. And that is exactly why we get tempted to check every new tool and article.
The first step towards being more productive and reducing information overload is setting time limits. Set specific time limits for reading feeds, twittering, connecting on Facebook etc.
Make a priority list of tasks and keep the most important work first on the list. And allot it the first time slot of 15-20 minutes when starting the day.

According to a 2009 Report on American Consumers “How Much Information”, because of computers, a full third of words and more than half of bytes are now received interactively.

Along with the rest of society, students began to use the internet to explore websites and research material, obtain access to niche experts, publish articles, read & disburse news, and socialize and share information, all at a very rapid pace.

The following table indicates the shares of information in different formats Per Average American, Per Day.

According to the above table, INFOC bytes are completely dominated by video sources: movies, TV, and computer games. Consumption time, INFOH on the other hand, is primarily used for video and audio (radio, telephone, and recorded music). Words, finally, come heavily from text sources (newspapers, magazine, books, and Internet use).

Contrasting measurements of INFOH, INFOC and INFOW

According to the above graph we spent 16 percent of our information hours using the Internet (versus 41 percent for TV), and receive 25 percent of our words INFOW from it (versus 45 percent from TV). The Internet was the source of only 2 percent of our INFOC bytes (versus 35 percent for TV).

The rapidly developing fuel cell market is a revenue generating industry.
Bloom Box, the latest introduction in the fuel cell world uses a series of discs, made from zirconium oxide and coated in special inks to induce a chemical reaction that turns natural gas, among other fuels, into electricity.

According to surveys done in 2008, stationary fuel cells represent the main market focus in the United States at 30%; followed by portable at 23% and auxiliary power units for vehicles at 18%. The major benefiters of fuel cell are automotive, stationary, and portable markets.

The shipments of fuel cell systems in 2009 were approximately 24,000 units, an increase of 41 per cent compared to 2008. Cumulative shipments of all types of fuel cells by the end of 2009 totaled around 75,000 units with three-quarters of this number produced in the last three years.

Fuel cell global market is anticipated to expand from $122 million in 2008 to nearly $3 billion over the next decade. Various innovative and greener products have been released into the fuel cell environment like:

Swedish automaker Volvo, through its subsidiary Volvo Technology Transfer, is to receive a total of SEK 200 million (US$25m) from the Swedish Energy Agency and two other investors for the PEM fuel cell.
There are analysts forecasting the fuel cell industry that the fuel cell vehicles market will develop to generate $23.9 billion in annual revenues by 2020.

By 2015, micro fuel cell markets reach $5.59 billion.

Information Overload: Productivity Killer?

Conservative estimates by International Data Corporation (IDC) suggest that an organization with 1,000 employees wastes at least $2.5 million per year due to the information overload dilemma such as failing to find existing information, searching for outdated information or recreating information that is outdated and poorly designed. The opportunity costs are even greater, exceeding $15million annually.

Highlights of the average number of hours spent globally per week by knowledge workers on the four main business activities include: 9.00 hours a week is spent on preparing, running and summarizing actions for meetings while 6.78 hours are spent managing and consolidating information such as documents, emails and web research. For communication and collaboration such as building power point presentations, writing documents with others and communicating the results to colleagues takes 5.74 hours per week. Finally, 10.70 hours is spent on project and task management.

In European results UK comes last in information management, spending 7.08 hours per week, with France spending 6.69 and Germany 5.91 hours.

According to the above graphs the average number of hours spent globally per week by knowledge workers on managing information accounts for 6.7 hours. In USA context the average number of hours spent per week on managing information accounts for 7 hours.

Based on surveys, Information Overload is pushing workers to the brink and cutting into workplace productivity. It has been identified that workers spend up to 50 percent of their day managing information. Information Overload costs the U.S. economy a minimum of $900 billion per year in lowered employee productivity and reduced innovation. This is a fairly conservative number and reflects the loss of 25% of the employee’s day.

Surveys indicate that 7 out of 10 office workers in the United States feel overwhelmed by information in the workplace, and more than two in five say they are headed for a data “breaking point,”.

The results of the survey reveal:

62 percent of professionals report that they spend a lot of time sifting through irrelevant information to find what they need; 68 percent wish they could spend less time organizing information and more time using the information that comes their way.

Workers admit that not being able to lay their hands on the right information at the right time impedes their ability to work efficiently; 85 percent agree that not being able to access the right information at the right time is a huge time-waster.

More than 40 percent of the survey participants indicate an inability to handle future increases in information flow.

While an average workday for white-collar workers is 8.89 hours, the survey finds that on average, 7.89 working hours are used conducting research, attending meetings, and searching for previously created documents.

White-collar professionals spend an average of 2.3 hours daily conducting online research, with one in 10 spending four hours or more on an average day.

In an 8.89-hour average workday, employees said they spent 7.89 hours conducting research, attending meetings and searching for documents, the survey found.

Harvard Business Review has recently found that an average worker spends 40% of the work day merely processing information which translates into only 60% of the average work day being spent on true value creation activities. 40% of the payroll costs are spent handling the overload.

The chart above indicates that spending too much time conducting research is the second highest occurrence in an average working week.

After an observation of employees in a various industries, it was found that 68% wished they could spend less time organizing information and more time using it. Another 85% said not finding the right information at the right time was a significant time waster, while 62% said they spent a lot of time sifting through useless information.

The purpose of a fuel cell is to produce an electrical current that can be directed outside the cell to do work, such as powering an electric motor or illuminating a light bulb or a city.

Fuel cell markets have grown continuously in the 2000’s. 2008 was the record year, as the deliveries amounted to 18,000 units, 50 % up from the 2007 figure (12,000). Total sales of the fuel cell units amounted to c. 500 million $US (350 million €) in 2008.
